Normally, if you say a book has big print and lots of whitespace and tables, that's kind of a bad thing. But, when the book purports to explain the rules of spelling in English, it becomes a very good thing indeed.
I'm sure it's not unusual among readers to be good spellers—though obviously there are many exception—and you may have had this sort of experience with someone who was not a good speller.

A must read for educators and parents of young children. I really wanted to give this five stars based solely on how much it explains the complexity and seemingly illogical spelling/pronunciation challenges of the English language. The only reason I marked it down to four stars was because the book presents itself as a silver bullet to the nation’s “literacy crisis.” The author uses a sampling of various statistics to explain what she means by the literacy crisis in America (26% of 8th graders a..more
Oh. My. Goodness! This book was awesome. I loved how the author clearly and methodically explained the genuine simplicity and logic of English. (Does that sound impossible? I thought so, too, until I read it!)
I am an intuitive reader. I figure things out quickly based on 'what sounds right/what looks right' and since I read a LOT as a child, and I have a fairly good memory, reading and spelling have always been easy for me. That's great for me as a reader, but not so great now that I'm teaching

This book provides some great information about the hows and whys of English words. It has a reference manual feel to it, though; so don't expect a page-turner. I especially hope to use the spelling rules in our homeschool. The list is also available on the author's website for quick reference, which is a bonus for me, as they copy I read came from the library and not my own shelf. However, the book is on my possible purchase list, as it would probably be handy to have around.
There is a profound depth of knowledge conveyed in this book. I have the utmost gratitude for the people who pore over so many words to uncover the more esoteric rules governing the English language. Though many of the rules mentioned in this book seemed obvious, many I only subconsciously understood, and many I had no clue about whatsoever prior to reading this book. Eide is precise and concise in explaining the rules and provides a good amount of explanation and further examples.

This fascinating book showed me how much I don't even begin to understand re: English.
In my homeschool teaching now, and in my English classroom a decade ago, my favorite refrain was, 'English is crazy.' I fully believed that. While reading this book was great for showing me, briefly, how logical English actually is, one read-through will not give me the kind of knowledge that Denise Eide has.
That's why, before even finishing Uncovering the Logic of English, I bought Denise Eide's entire Logic

Really interesting idea. Made me want to learn a lot more about the topic of teaching reading and spelling. Not well edited. Left a lot ambiguous - could be better organized. I picked up this book after hearing an episode of the podcast Educate called 'Hard Words: Why Aren't Our Kids Being Taught to Read?' Now I have to re-listen to the podcast to remember what the current resources on phonics education are.

I agree with many of the other reviewers that this book was easy to read and presented practically with its many tables and charts. It also makes so much sense to me even though I'm not a mathematical pattern thinker. I would definitely recommend this to English teachers.
If you think English spelling and reading make no sense, check out this book! English is morpho-phonemic, based on meaning and sounds. This book methodically helps the reader understand what that means, with lots of examples.

Fascinating and a great reference tool. I’m a good read and speller without being taught most of this explicitly, but I’m so glad I to have it as a reference for helping my kids develop literacy skills.

Excellent source of info!
I never knew all these spelling rules and all of the phonograms of English. This will help me greatly as a teacher of ESL.
Wow! This book was surprisingly interesting and many 'ahhhh!' moments while reading it. Great for any parent teaching their child to read.

There is a method to the madness.
There are more phonograms and phonemes in English than we usually teach. This book is phonics on steroids.
Helpful rules and appendices attaches.

highly recommend it for any one reads and writes in English 100%
I appreciate this philosophy and find the spelling rules to be helpful, but..reading this book is like marching through knee-deep mud in heavy boots. Not exactly a page-turner. ;)
I think this will be a very useful book to have read.. And a good resource to have for our homeschool. Good comprehensive spelling rules are easier to learn than an endless list of exceptions to an incomplete set of rules. I only gave it four stars though because the author seems to think teaching spelling rules better would solve the literacy crisis, which I think is simplifying a complex situation to much. It also reads a bit like a manual. In any case, I did come away with a better appreciat..more

All elementary educators should read this one.
If you care anything at all about literacy, this book is a must-read. Educators, parents (home educating or not), adults who struggle with reading or spelling .. just get this from your library or bookstore and dig in.
The first part fleshes out what went wrong in our country to create the current literacy crisis. The crisis is even worse than I thought, and what's unacceptable is there is a practical solution that isn't widely being implemented: there is an actual logic to English, and we can l

This book is a must have, especially if you have struggling spellers or readers. It would also be great for ESL teachers.
In her book, Eide goes over the 33 rules rules that govern the English language, such as when you use a silent 'e' or how to know if the letter 'c' makes a hard or soft sound. She also give a detailed list of the different phonemes in the English language along with the rule they accompany.
I found this book very enlightening and it demystified a lot of what I'd wondered about

Recommends it for: Ellen, literacy and ESL tutors and teachers, language mavens
A truly amazing book that I would recommend for anyone who teaches or tutors reading or ESL. Who knew there were so many reasons that some words end in a silent e? Or that English words do not end in i,j,u, or v? That rather than a language of exceptions, English is a language where 98% of the words are governed by a finite number of rules? Eide goes through the rules, explains them clearly, and then gives well thought out examples. Tables at the end of the book summarize what has been covered i..more

I came across this book when I was researching phonics programs for my 4 year old. This book is certainly above her level, but it was extremely useful for me, as her teacher, to understand these concepts. I'm lucky that spelling comes pretty naturally to me, but that doesn't mean I understand *why* words are spelled the way they are. I wanted to be able to explain why, and this book is the answer! It's less than 200 pages, but very comprehensive. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wa..more

This book is amazing! If you've ever struggled with spelling or know someone who does, you have to read this. I attended the author's lectures at a recent homeschool convention and had to buy her book. She goes through the rules and sounds that explain 98% of English words (98%!! There really aren't as many exceptions as we thought!). I found it to be a pretty easy read and know I will refer back to it again and again as my children learn to read.

But what if the problem is not the language itself, but the rules we were taught? What if we could see the complexity of English as a powerful tool rather than a hindrance? ~ Denise Eide[return][return]Every parent and every teacher should study this book - in fact, so should every speaker of English - particularly those of us who were taught with the inefficient and harmful methods used in the last 50+ years.
Even after thirty years of dabbling in the English language, I still find myself making spelling mistakes when writing; however, this book helped tremendously in understanding why certain words are spelled as they are and, furthermore, provided lots of neat rules to help you remember. The author makes a compelling argument early in the book as to why America is becoming more and more illiterate (sight-reading has replaced phonics). Great read and reference work.
This book teaches rules for spelling that cover 98% of the words in the English language. It also is a great help in learning phonics for literacy. Did you ever wonder why strange has an e at the end? or why you add a k when picnic becomes picnicking? This book tells you all sorts of reasons for things like that, some of which you may have figured out. I'm reading just a couple pages a day and learning LOTS.
I am learning from and enjoying this book. This is a book that all teachers that teach students to read, should read, actually, I think it would help ALL teachers, regardless of what they teach. English speaking teachers, of all subjects, should know that English is logical and the rules behind this language that make it logical.
Finished the book. Highly recommend. I am already using what I have learned with the students I tutor.
I can't promote this book enough. I'm a reading teacher and this book covers things not taught even in graduate level programs.
I work with many students who get frustrated that 'English doesn't make sense' and 'everything's just an exception' and this book gives them solid answers to their questions (finally!).
If you're daunted by 'grammar books,' don't be worried about this one. It's a surprisingly easy read and not nearly as dry as most of its type.

Truly excellent - clear, concise, and above all much needed. The environment in which I work has a great deal of second- and third-language English, where an approach as laid out in Uncovering the Logic of English can make all the difference to students' mastery of English. This is a great resource and I recommend it highly.
